Help to Ensure Your Medical Insurance is Only a Precaution
Getting travel insurance to cover you and your family for any medical emergencies that may arise is a great idea. But having the peace of mind that any doctor visits or hospital stays will be covered by an insurance policy doesn't mean you don't need to be safe. After all, medical insurance is one of those things that you need to have but hope you'll never need.
So when you leave the country for a vacation, whether it's to somewhere exotic, somewhere modern, or even a cruise, here are some safety tips for you to remember. Hopefully they'll help you keep that insurance policy tucked away and unused.
What you shouldn't drink:
Whether or not water is safe to drink is always a question that comes to mind. The truth is that you can never be sure. If you're in a place where you aren't fully confident about the water supply, then stay on the safe side and avoid it by buying bottled water. This is such common advice that in some tourist spots, bottled water is the only water you can get.
Due to the same concerns, be careful when drinking juice if you think it may have had water added. Also, remember that ice cubes have the same risks as plain old water—some places will use purified or bottled water for their ice cubes but, again, if you aren't sure, drink a warm drink! Teas and coffees use boiled water, naturally, so you don't have to be as concerned.
What you shouldn't eat:
Packaged foods are generally safe bets. Chances are they are coming from places that have health standards in place. However, food from restaurants can be hard to judge. Tourist books and the staff at higher class hotels are good places to find recommendations. Otherwise, popular opinion is the next best thing; you can feel more confident about the quality of food in places that are busy.
On the other hand, because you don't know how they cook or store their meats, in many places it's best to avoid buying food from street vendors. Also, avoid salads if you can't be confident that the vegetables were washed properly, or that they weren't washed in dirty water.
What you should bring:
People who take prescription medications should not only remember to bring them along, but to bring extras as well. This is because trip delays can happen while you're away, and not being prepared can leave you without medication for one to several days. As for non prescription medication it's often good to pack the standards, like Aspirin and something for heartburn, if you aren't positive they'll be available from your destination.
Another good preventative item to pack is sun screen, when going to beaches or any other sunny places. Once there, don't forget to put it on even if you don't plan on being in the sun for too long. Lastly, hand sanitizer is a must! So, once you've got to your destination, remember to play it safe. By doing so, you'll help keep that trusted travel medical insurance as nothing more than a precaution.
