Many Don't Know What They're Insured For

More often than not, people don't seem to know what they are actually insured for these days. As much as they understand their various policies as they apply to day to day living, few people completely grasp what their insurance policies do for them in new situations that arise, specifically travel.

For instance, travel medical insurance is often pushed around like an imperative when booking a trip. While it is by far one of the most important things to have while vacationing, the surprise is that many people are already covered without realizing it. The same thing holds true for things that are lost or stolen while abroad, specifically lost baggage, and there are also misconceptions about insurance for car rentals.

Starting with travel medical insurance, surveys have shown than a high percentage of us are already covered without knowing it. If all you have is your provincial or government sponsored health insurance, than you're likely going to be in need of buying something additional before your trip. Don't worry; this kind of thing is widely available and rarely expensive.

However, if you have an insurance plan already in place that's independent of what the government provides, you might be covered for medical problems while traveling. You may even be one of the many who don't realize it. Take the time to look into it before spending money on something extra.

When you look into it though, be wary of a few things. The plan you have might not cover you for everything you may need, or for that matter it may not extend to your family while you're away. For the few extra dollars a separate insurance plan would cost for the duration of your trip, it might just be worth your while. Also, if your trip involves adventurous activities, things like rafting or mountain climbing, your current insurance might become void.

With auto insurance, many people just aren't aware as to whether or not their regular coverage will extend to a rental car. Quite often it will cover you for liability while driving a rental car, but not usually in cases where you're out of the country.

Still, before you go spending money on any auto insurance, plan ahead. Get copies of anything the rental agency will want you to pay for and sign for ahead of time, and have you insurance representative look it over. You might find that a lot of things the car company tries to sell you are just doubling up on something you already have.

Another common travel insurance necessity is coverage for lost or stolen baggage. This is a big worry for a lot of people, and sometimes it should be. However, while you're mostly likely unprotected for things like expenses you incur due to lost luggage, the contents of the luggage itself is most likely covered under a policy you already have.

For this, you'll want to look closely at your home owners or renters insurance. For most policies, lost property is lost property, no matter where it's lost. But because of issues you may have with deductibles, or the security you'd have knowing you're covered for expenses, you still may find the addition of a travel insurance package brings you that much more peace of mind.
